Pepper hadn't expected the call, but then again...who did expect a call from a hospital out of, what felt like, the blue?

She was still processing the information that she had been given, even if it hadn't quite been enough (in her opinion). Tony's memory was gone. The doctor hadn't been able to go over all of the details over the phone, so the normally calm woman was flustered with both concern and the nagging need to see that he was going to be all right for herself. The ride to the hospital was almost unbearable. Pepper could feel the churning in her stomach, and her eyes were burning with the effort to hold back the tears that wanted to spring forth.

By the time she walked, at a clipped pace, through the elevator and toward he nurses station Pepper was fighting back the nausea. Was Tony going to be okay? How badly had he been hurt? The questions came rolling through her mind one after the other and she did her best to categorize them in the back of her mind by importance as she spoke with the nurse, a firm demand to speak with the doctor (whose name she had of course remembered) and to see Tony. The first happened before the latter, to prepare Pepper the CEO. By the time she was filled in on Tony's situation, and what to expect, the splotches on Pepper's face were much more prominent, but her eyes and the splotches would have been far more scarlet had she allowed herself to shed the tears.

This wasn't about her; she had to be strong, after all, Tony was going to wind up confused...and she was here to help him. She had no idea what to expect, she realized, as she stood at the door to Tony's room. So, she stood there for a long moment, right hand poised on the knob and inhaled for a five count, to put herself together. Once she felt confident that she was under control Pepper pushed the knob, knocked with her free hand, and entered the room.

"Tony?" Pepper spoke tentatively, ignoring the clack of her heels as she approached the bed. She was in control. She had her own emotions, yes, but they were masked for the moment so that she could deal with him. That was what was needed right now. Despite the fact that it worried, and even scared, her to be called in for this...for him in this situation....she could only imagine how he felt. Reaching the bed, Pepper put her hand, lightly, on the man's arm, ready to pull it back...or even step back if this went poorly. It was doubtful hat he would remember her, or anything else, but she was his contact, his person, and she was here regardless of anything else. "How are you feeling?"

It seemed like the thing to ask; that was something he would, at least, know.
